Dr Ruth Zanker here from the New Zealand Broadcasting School. I am currently on leave in Oxford.
My research interests include the current political economy of children's global media flows...with an emphasis on implications for exposed/deregulated media markets. I look forward to attending your seminar.
I am happy to contribute research perspectives if you believe that would be useful.
Best wishes
Dr Ruth Zanker

Social Market Foundation/Pact Event
Does Children's Television have a future in the UK?

Westminster/St James's Park)
Speakers including: James Thickett, Ofcom
Floella Benjamin, OBE, Actress and Presenter
Laurence Bowen, Feelgood Fiction
Chair: Lord (David) Lipsey, Chair, Social Market Foundation
The Social Market Foundation, the independent public policy think tank, is
extremely pleased to invite you to this debate, being held in association
with Pact, taking place at One Birdcage Walk, London SW1H 9JJ on Wednesday
25th July at 10-12 noon.
Chidren's tv in the UK is facing a crisis. There is a growing lack of home
grown television programmes for children, and much of the content of the
media they consume is produced overseas. Whilst this might lead to a
diversity and appreciation of different cultures, it also arguably results
in a diminution of the cultural experience and development of a sense of
identity that might ensue from consumption of UK produced programming. The
amount of programming will further be diminished as a result of
forthcoming restrictions on advertising to children. This will lead to the
cessation of programming for children on ITV, as well as a significant
reduction on cable and satellite tv.
This event, which will draw speakers and attendees from parliamentarians,
Ofcom, the major broadcasters and producers, will examine in detail the
nature of the crisis, ask whether it is an example of market failure,
examine how important plurality is in a multi media age and discuss the
most appropriate mechanisms by which to protect children's programming.
We very much hope you will be able to join us. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EVENT
IS FREE TO ATTEND, BUT YOU MUST REGISTER SO THAT WE CAN UPDATE YOU ON THE
LINEUP OR ANY OTHER DETAILS. If you can come along, or would like to send
a colleague in your place, then please contact Myriam Ben Ammar on
