Dear List
I have come across a mining term that I'm not familiar with, and was
wondering if anyone from the list can identify it? The term is "Akila" it
comes from the Brooke Index (Exeter) who rewrote extracts from the Mining
Journal, and is written in the sale particulars of Bertha Consols Mining
Company Limited (1895-1900) "...It had a 45 x 5 ft. water-wheel, another 35
x 4 ft. used for hauling, and a 20 x 2 ft. model used for jogging, a
Cornish crusher with 28-inch rolls, an iron raft-wheel and timber work, 10
heads of Californian stamps, six buddles, 2 patent jigging machines, 150
fathoms of 2½ in. rods, 2 balance-bobs, a compressor with 100 fathoms of 3
in. air-pipes, 300 fathoms of crucible steel wire ropes, tram wagons and
rails, akila (?), tools, and two sheds about 30 ft. long built of wood with
corrugated iron roofs." I was wondering if a spelling mistake had crept in,
or whether the word (Akila) is a correct mining piece of machinery, or
something of that nature. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank
you.
Kindest regards Chris Kelland.
