Vacancy: Country Analyst, Middle East
The Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the
Norwegian Refugee Council is looking for an experienced Country Analyst to
strengthen the Centre’s research and advocacy team. The IDMC is the
leading international body monitoring conflict-induced internal

Responsibilities
Among the Country Analyst’s main tasks will be the regular updating of
country profiles on internal displacement. This includes continuous
monitoring of the political and internal displacement situation in the
countries of the Middle East. Responsibilities also include collecting and
analysing relevant information; entering data in the Centre’s IDP database
and updating the country profiles included in the database; active
networking with humanitarian organisations in the field and at
headquarters level; conducting occasional field visits; contributing to
the development of country-specific advocacy strategies; and writing
detailed country reports which form the basis of the IDMC’s information
and advocacy work. In addition, the Country Analyst may be designated as a
focal point for covering a thematic area related to internal displacement.
Qualifications
Candidates should have an advanced degree, as well as documented knowledge
in the field of international humanitarian law and human rights,
preferably with a focus on forced migration. Applicants must have
significant professional research experience relating to the Middle East.
Additional experience in advocacy work, field experience, and familiarity
with the international humanitarian and human rights system at field or
headquarters level will be considered strong assets. Fluency in English
and outstanding drafting skills are essential. Working knowledge of Arabic
is required. Candidates should be highly motivated, well organised, and
able to work quickly and efficiently under pressure, within an
international team.

Vacancy: Senior IDP Profiling Adviser

The Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the
Norwegian Refugee Council is looking for a Senior IDP Profiling Adviser.
The IDMC is the leading international body monitoring conflict-induced
internal displacement worldwide. Through its work, the Centre contributes
to improving national and international capacities to protect and assist
the millions of people around the globe who have been displaced within
their own country as a result of conflicts or human rights violations. At
the request of the United Nations, the Geneva-based IDMC runs an online
database providing comprehensive information and analysis on internal
displacement in some 50 countries. It also acts as a clearing-house for
global and national IDP figures. Based on its monitoring and data
collection activities, the Centre advocates for durable solutions to the
plight of the internally displaced in line with international standards.
The IDMC also carries out training activities to enhance the capacity of
local actors to respond to the needs of IDPs. In its work, the Centre
cooperates with and provides support to local and national civil society

Responsibilities
The Senior IDP Profiling Adviser will be the main focal point within the
IDMC for issues related to the profiling of IDP populations. This includes
analyzing profiling needs worldwide; establishing contacts with Country
Teams to offer and, if requested, provide assistance with setting up
profiling exercises; keeping track of IDP figures; updating the IDMC’s
online IDP statistics table; participating in profiling-related inter-
agency fora; collecting lessons-learned from past and ongoing profiling
exercises; acting as a repository of the inter-agency IDP profiling
guidance on behalf of the IDMC; and establishing and maintaining a loose
network of organizations interested in IDP profiling.
Qualifications
Applicants should have an advanced degree in social sciences, law,
statistics, demography, public administration or other related field, as
well as at least 12 years of humanitarian experience, including in
management and/or coordination functions in major IDP situations at the
field level. Experience in data collection, especially conception and
implementation of surveys is an advantage. Candidates must have a thorough
understanding of inter-agency coordination mechanisms at the HQ and field
level, as well as of forced migration and protection issues. Demographic
background, or first-hand experience with IDP population profilings will
be considered a strong asset. This position requires highly developed
diplomatic skills, very good communication skills, fluency in English and
French (written and spoken), as well as excellent drafting skills.
Candidates should be highly motivated, willing to travel to the field,
well organised, and able to work quickly and efficiently under pressure,
within an international and multi-functional team.
