Damn fine.
10 of 10 stars and then an extra star for "palliasse."
Caleb Cluff <[log in to unmask]> wrote: As I walked out in the morning rain,
Walking with my girlie,
The birds who guard the lazy dead
were cautious of the early.
"Where do you walk in the morning rain,
you there with your girlie?"
The scissor-grinder turned his head,
the hare flew from the barley.
"I'm walking from the charnel house,
I'm walking from the brothel.
I've spent the night in carnal bliss
on the floor of a filthy hovel."
A jackdaw cracked the skull of a mouse,
the scorpion fled to Bethel.
A ladder shone in the scungy mist,
the carpenter dropped his chisel.
The rain, it hissed an adder,
my girlie and I were brave;
we were searching for a palliasse,
not a mud-laced grave.
My girlie she grabbed the ladder,
the chisel was harder to save,
swimming in the long grass
and the holes where dead lovers are laid.
The rungs of the ladder were oily,
The holes were endless deep.
The birds had fixed on my girlie
and the stones where prophets sleep.
The ladder stretched to heaven,
but the angels who held it were cheap.
They chopped at the rungs with the chisel
the jackdaw had brought with his beak.
