Dear Colleague
There are still some places available on the following workshops that Netskills will be running at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in July.
1. Database Design and SQL, 4th July
-----------------------------------------------------
The most important aspect of database-driven web publishing is the database itself. Poorly designed and constructed databases often lead to additional, expensive and unnecessary development (usually requiring extra scripting and retrospective fixes) in order to produce a functioning web application. Netskills can help you develop the skills to be able to produce an efficient, scalable and optimised SQL database for use with your web solutions. This practical workshop will demonstrate how to develop an initial database design and turn it into a cost-effective, working solution.
Topics covered include:
Identifying data relationships from a real-life scenarios
Creating a conceptual database model
Use of Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) to produce a scalable and efficient database design
Nomalisation of a conceptual database design
Mapping a conceptual design to a physical database structure
Using SQL to create a database structure
Populating a database using SQL
Writing simple SQL queries to interrogate a database
2. Databases on the Web, 5th July
-----------------------------------------------------
Being able to integrate database technology with the provision of web content is now a common expectation for web site developers. Harnessing these techniques can improve the management, maintenance and scalability of your web sites. This practical workshop teaches you the skills needed to provide web access to existing databases - enabling you to start developing web sites using database-managed content with confidence.
Topics covered include:
Why is web/database integration important?
Key methods & processes for web/database interaction
Active Server Pages (ASP) and ODBC
Using PHP with MySQL
Static vs. dynamic pages: database-managed or database-driven?
Information management issues
