It appears SPM must be handling the file-separator incorrectly
somewhere... my best guess for your original problem of spm_select not
showing anything, is that spm_select's cpath subfunction is wrong. As
a wild guess, try changing lines 1112-1113 (as of updates 826), from:
fs = '\';
fs1 = '\\';
to something like:
fs = filesep;
fs1 = [filesep filesep];
assuming that network paths have what looks like a doubled Yen sign,
similar to the European Windows convention of \ for standard paths and
\\ for network paths.
