ELEFANTE
Like any good beast it occupies space
the middle of the crowded room
like Emile DeBecque, Nellie Forbush,
or a dead dog.
It puffs carelessly on a Gitanes
laughing at the anti-smoking laws
it wipes its nose and then sticks its huge paws
into everyone's wineglass.
But.
Don't mention it's here
don't mention the odd odor of ordure
or perfume.
Become as little children
and Pretend none of this happened.
Work around it
get over it
get around it
get out of it.
