I've at least seen Berkoff on stage. His NT production of Wilde's Salome,
here in the early 90s, was quite brilliant. His Herod was total ham, from
one point of view - grotesque, excessive, full of actorly tricks - but it
was utterly compelling. Wilde's poetry in that production was unnervingly
beautiful; I came out it fizzing with excitement, I had always known that
you could make language do that in the theatre, but I had never seen it done
before. (I've seen it done since, though).
But I digress.
Yes, the self recognition is the difficult part, hence the folly. :)
Now I really must get back to work. As Camus is also said to have had
written above his desk: Time. Don't Waste it.
