The Old Mills engine is likely to be the oldest of its general design by
about thirty years. There was another of c1868 that remained into the
1980s and went to Chatterley Whitfield.
However, we have lost track of that one and there is a distinct
possibility it has been scrapped.
Another of c1865 was scrapped at the end of the colliery in which it was
installed.
The Old Mills winder is certainly important being the earliest survivor
of its type and as a unique survivor from a local Maker to the Somerset
coalfield it is also impossible.
If you want to contact me off-list about this we can discuss further

Subject: Re: Is this the oldest horizontal steam winder?
Regarding the Old Mills engine there were two replies to this question
when I posted it at the beginning of 2006
- Both Stafford & Simon replied referring to the vertical winding engine
preserved at the Beamish Museum in Co Durham Date 1855, built by Joicey
of Newcastle upon Tyne.
in use until 1962 at Chop Hill Pit, Beamish.
Subsequently moved about half-a-mile to its present site
The Old Mills engine is horizontal
- lots of helpful replies about older surviving vertical winders
- no one has yet suggested an older surviving horizontal winder
- it would also be interesting to know of any other horizontal winders
(even if now not surviving) of a similar or earlier date to put into
context how important the Old Mills one actually is.
