I am co-convenor of a group called Sociologists Outside Academia which
is part of the British Sociological Association.
A major problem for freelance researchers is gaining library access.
Although we can get reference rights as members of the public or as
alumni in most universities, we have no access to digital resources.
I have heard that retired staff can now have associate status which
allows them all library access rights. Does anyone know if this could
be extended to alumni?
Also with new wireless access becoming increasingly implemented in
libraries, would this enable the public access to digital journals?
I know that there are issues with subscriptions and licensing. I have
read the report published by The Research and Information Network
(http://www.rin.ac.uk) about digital access for the public.
I just wonder is anyone on this list knows if there is any reason why
alumni can't have access to the library online journals and have an
athens account for example?
Thanks
Annika
