I am sending this on behalf of one of our tutors. If you are interested
in bidding on any of the books contact Paul direct. His details are below.
Having sent letters and emails to as many celebrities as possible, we have
now received a number of signed books through the post for the Celebrity
Book Auction to be held at Brooklands Hotel in Barnsley on Friday 15th
June 2007 at 7.30pm. The celebrities were asked to sign and donate a copy
of either their favourite book or a book that has inspired them in some
way. All money raised will go towards the Barnsley Students Expedition to
Tanzania (Kilimanjaro) which departs for Africa on 10th July 2007!
The event should appeal to an eclectic audience as a wide variety of books
have been sent. Expedition patron Brian Blessed has returned two fabulous
examples - "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" (he played the voice
of Boss Nass in the film) and a collectors edition of "The Travels of
Marco Polo" - an inspiration to any fellow traveller!
Other celebrities who have provided books include author Freya North,
entertainer and traveller Michael Palin, actors Robbie Coltraine (aka
Hagrid from Harry Potter), Danny John-Jules (aka The Cat from Red Dwarf)
and Richard Victor Meldrew Wilson ("I don't believe it!"), game show host
Noel Edmonds, film director Ken Loach ("Cathy Come Home", "Kes"), gardener
Alan Titchmarsh, impressionist Rory Bremner, celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-
Whittingstall, the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu and Prime Minister
Tony Blair. However, the Prime Minister's wife Cherie Booth has outdone
her husband, donating a copy of Bill Clinton's Autobiography - signed not
only by Cherie, but also by Bill Clinton himself!
The latest books to have been received are from local singing sensation
Sam Nixon and Cricket Umpire Dickie Bird (we are also hoping that these
two will also attend the event). Yorkshire Cricket Club have donated a
signed shirt and we are still waiting to hear from a couple of other local
celebrities - so watch this space - we may still be looking good on the
dance floor!
If you can't make the auction you will soon be able to place a commission
bid via our expedition website at:
