Hi
I wholeheartedly agree with your comments Anne. As an information management graduate working as a web developer within an IT department, it's difficult to see how a mentor in, for example, the public library sector would have a good understanding of the day to day issues of my job.
My boss has just qualified as a mentor for this very reason.

Hello,
As someone who has just joined this list and ist just planning to start
chartership, I have to say that I have found all the Cilip guidance on
chartering, structuring the portfolio etc extremely unhelpful -
"somewhat vague" certainly sums up my first impressions! I am hoping the
Cilip courses help clarify this, but my first impressions have been that
quite a lot of work could be put in by Cilip etc to make the guidance
more helpful. I don't even have a real impression of the workload I need
to put in or how much time this could take, which isn't exactly helpful
when considering starting chartering.
On the mentoring point, I imagine they could be very helpful but again
the guidance seems a little woolly - there seems a lack of structured
information on when to submit applications, when to contact a mentor
etc. Also, as a law librarian, I was extremely disappointed to see that
there are hardly any corporate or even government librarians available
as mentors. I can't help but think it would be easier to have a mentor
who worked in the same field as you and who would have a good knowledge
of the potential areas of your day to day job which could be used for
chartering. Has anyone else had this problem? Or have they felt that a
mentor from any field of librarianship was just as useful? I'd be very
interested to hear - at the moment my line manager is considering
qualifying as a mentor to try and help solve this problem, but of course
this has a knock-on effect for me when it comes to understanding where
to start!
Anne

Hope people don't mind me butting in as a lurker - but have
people found (or not) their mentors any help on this issue? As a mentor
myself it should be part of the role to assist here.
