I'm not sure the second cat species has been correctly identified. I
don't think software engineering is the issue; social engineering is the
big problem. The sites are set up and run for a reason: profit. If it
can be shown that co-operation in some aspects is beneficial to the
companies' profits, the companies will co-operate in those aspects. For
example, it's interesting to watch OpenID take-up - a simple grass roots
authentication system that potentially benefits the companies concerned
by providing (limited) troll identification and hence management,
keeping the sites marginally more friendly than they would otherwise be.
