Promoting Cultural Competence in Health and Social Care Practice
A distance learning on-line course for health and social care practitioners seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge, and comply with national policies and the expectations of an ethnically diverse, multicultural population.
This course is suitable for all staff across the full range of disciplines in NHS Acute, Primary Care and Mental
Health Trusts, Local Authorities such as Social Services departments, and the Voluntary Sector. It is especially
valuable for those working in areas of high ethnic diversity. By increasing the cultural competence of policy makers
and service providers the course will increase the compliance of employing organisations with their statutory
obligations to have explicit plans for achieving race equality in their service delivery and employment practices.
Students will be able to utilise credits gained by successful completion of this course to progress towards
advanced studies/awards.
Aims of the Course
The overall aim of this course is to help health and social care practitioners develop their cultural competence.
Learning Mode
The course will be delivered as a distance learning programme, using the University's virtual learning environment OASISplus, via the Internet. This will enable students to take the course without the costs (time and money) of travel and with the option to work from home (or anywhere they can access the internet) at their own pace across the eight week time frame for completion. There will be 150 hours of learning/instruction:
10 hrs introduction to on-line learning;
50 hrs on-line lecture materials, e-tutorials and e-feedback;
50 hrs participation in e-discussions and self assessment exercises;
40 hrs preparation of reflective journal and completion of module evaluation.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
-critically examine concepts such as culture, ethnohistory, cultural identity, acculturation, ethnocentricity and
stereotyping;
-consider the socio-cultural determinants of health with particular focus the inequalities in health and welfare;
-demonstrate deepened sensitivity of the psycho-social and cultural issues fundamentally affecting the health behaviours and well-being of minority ethnic groups and refugees;
-be aware of the importance of culturally appropriate communication and how this can be improved within their organisations.
-search a wide range of data sources to obtain relevant information;
-develop problem-solving and communication skills;
-offer and receive constructive feedback;
-apply cognitive skills to recognise and challenge discrimination and racism both at practice and policy level.
You will need
* evidence of ability to study at UK higher education level 3;
* basic IT skills;
* access to the Internet;
Start date
The course will commence on 15th October 2007.
Supporting Materials
Students will receive instruction packs detailing the use of the on-line learning software. Each student will be supplied
with a copy of the book Papadopoulos I (2006)(ed): Transcultural Health and Social Care: Development of culturally
competent practitioners. Churchill Livingstone Elsevier.
Course Cost
The cost of enrolment and assessment will be £500.
Accreditation & Further Study
Successful completion of the course will earn 15 credits at level 3/4 which may be used to progress towards an advanced
qualification. Examples include the MSc/ PGDip/PGCert in European Nursing, the MA/PGDip/PGCert Professional Development with work experience/ workbased learning, and the MA/PGDip/PGCert Social Policy and Development
