Hello to you all. Thank you for those of you who have said that you
are interested in the project and exhibition. I have quite a few
people but would love more! If you know of anybody that you can
forward this to or have any more colleagues/friends that you think may
be interested then please forward this mail on to them. I am
re-sending the information about the project below. For those of you
who have already said yes I will be mailing you all soon to tell you
about what is going to happen next. Once again thanks.
Call for participants:
As part of the Big Draw, a national drawing event happening across the
country organised by Drawing Power in October, Jordan McKenzie in
association with C4RD (Centre for Recent Drawing) is organising an
event and exhibition. The event is called From One To Another and
posted below are details of the proposed exhibition:
Untitled: From One To Another examines the notation of travel, using
the passing through, the journey, as a starting point for intimate
encounters and exchange. It encompasses drawing, mapping and
performance to embark on a journey, a journey made by many and
recalled through intimate encounters.
1. Each participant will begin a journey to a neighbouring
county/city. They may take a car, public transport or possibly simply
walk (which ever seems most appropriate) over to the next county/city.
During this travel they will write an account of their journey. This
account may be a simple logging of their movement, the geographical
spaces they passed through, how many miles they travelled, or it may
be something more complex; a description of people they met, the
thoughts and daydreams they had, smells… How they notate their journey
is up to each individual to decide, but it has to be written down onto
a piece of paper.
2. Their destination will be to meet a stranger, the location,
identity and contact details of which have already been given to the
participants by Jordan and C4RD. Upon meeting the stranger, the
participant will then gently notate the written account of their
journey onto the back of the stranger, recounting his/her journey
through touch. It may be a list of words, images, an abstract
sensation. The stranger will then make a drawing of this journey
purely by using the sensation of touch on their backs, feeling the
journey and interpreting it through drawn marks. The drawing may be
made on paper, composed of mud on the floor, carved onto a piece of
wood, how they draw the journey is up to each individual to decide.
The only stipulation is that it leaves a recordable visual trace.
3. After completing this, the second participant (stranger) embarks on
another journey to meet another stranger and notate that journey upon
their backs. This new participant will then make a drawing from the
encounter and then embark on a journey to meet another
participant/stranger.
4. This will continue as a chain-letter series of
journeys-encounters-drawings spreading all over the country. The
written accounts of the journeys along with the drawings sent either
hard copy or photographed or filmed and e mailed along with a picture
of the participant will then be sent to the gallery to be exhibited.
All the work will also be posted onto a web site and exhibited as part
of the Big Draw event at C4RD.
Regards
Jordan McKenzie
