The National Disability Authority was established to advise the Minister of
Justice Equality and Law Reform on matters of disability policy and
practice, including accessibility issues. It has specific functions in
relation to research and the development of standards and codes of practice.
Arising from the Disability Act 2005 the NDA may be requested by the
Minister to develop codes of practice in relation to accessible services and
buildings in the public sector. To date the NDA has developed a code of
practice for public bodies in relation to accessible services.
The NDA has prepared draft guidance to promote the accessibility of the
built environment in schools. This publication will help school principals
and members of Boards of Management to improve the accessibility of schools
for people with disabilities. The draft publication is now available on the
NDA website www.nda.ie.
The NDA is now seeking views on this draft publication including comments on
any aspects of the guidance document in need of further attention and on the
clarity and accessibility of the document. In addition, we are interested to
learn of good practice and innovative measures from schools regarding
facilities or features designed to meet the needs of students or teachers
with disabilities Please submit your feedback by email or in writing to the
address below. If you require the document in an alternative format, please
contact Martina McTiernan – see contact details below.
Please submit your feedback by email or in writing to the address below by
Friday 6th July 2007.
