Folks,
I was at Harvard yesterday for a day of "metadata discussion." I talked
to a small group of interested librarians in the morning and gave a
presentation to about 200 library staff in the afternoon. My slides are
mainly images so they don't stand alone, but I will try to work up a
"talking points" document. I did present the RDA/DCMI project, although
not in great detail. I mainly talked about the need to get our
cataloging standard off the printed page and into an actionable form. I
didn't get a significant negative response, although it's very hard to
gauge exactly what people understood. When I presented the idea to a
smaller group in the morning there was the concern that the library
world just doesn't have the time to go back and re-tool at this point. I
think it'll be extremely important to have something to show people, and
to explain that what we are creating is a building block that can be
used *as needed and as desired*. I myself am interested to see if the
library world moves forward together or if we fork different
technologies based on new capabilities.
It would be good to start working on talking points or an FAQ, because
there are definitely issues that always come up. I'll write those up as
they occur to me. Should I go ahead and add them to the wiki?
