Which is why I serve pre-compiled binary packages for all of these
things (both ppc and intel):

In the case of "fink" it means either
(a) Not a lot of users are testing it and providing feedback
(b) Some (often indirect) dependency (in this case, gfortran) is in
unstable, precluding moving it.
(b) Maintainer is to busy/lazy/distracted to put it into stable.
If a package in unstable doesn't work, they kick your arse pretty
quickly (as I have found).
