Role specification
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a number of individuals to join the
Railway Heritage Committee, which became an executive Non-Departmental
Public Body (NDPB) of the Department for Transport. The Committee
designates records and artefacts that are deemed historically significant
and worthy of permanent preservation. Where the owners - mostly rail
industry bodies - wish to dispose of a designated record or artefact, the
Committee agrees which institutions or persons hold them, as well as they
terms under which they will be offered. Overall, there are currently 15
members of the RHC a mixture of representative members from other
relevant organisations and individual members. There is also a statutory
vacancy on the Committee at present. The Committee is chaired by Lord
Faulkner of Worcester. The Secretary of State for Transport is looking to
make up to 5 appointments to the RHC.
There are certain roles which an RHC member is expected to fulfil:
Attending regular committee meetings and occasional seminars.
Attending and addressing meetings and conferences if required.
Representing the RHC to the rail industry, interested organisations and
other heritage stakeholders if asked.
Contributing to the development and review of RHC strategy and
workplans.
Potentially leading specific workstreams and chairing sub-committees if
appointed to do so by the RHC.
All members are required to contribute to the scrutiny and audit of the
RHC.
Person specification
There are two categories of appointment. Candidates can apply for both
categories (and will be separately considered for each) but they must meet
the minimum statutory criteria for the separate categories for which they
are applying.
The Candidates applications will then be assessed against the following
criteria:
Essential criteria - skills, knowledge and experience:
Proven leadership and strategic thinking.
Ability to build credible, constructive relationships with all sections
of the rail industry and heritage stakeholders, as well as work within a
Committee environment.
Desirable criteria
Experience of working in either the rail industry and/or the heritage
sector (not necessarily the railways).
Knowledge of a relevant specialist field such as civil engineering,
railway law, railway history or museum, heritage or archives and records
qualifications.
Demonstrate understanding of, and an enthusiasm for, rail heritage
issues.
Regular user of National Rail services
