I have read the developing debate on the above with interest. I think,
and please correct me if I am wrong Maria, that we both received this
document from the MLA which gave the impression that this was their
vision for our future 20 years hence. As such it needed to be
addressed immediately as to whether the rest of the profession had
seen this vision and agreed with it and also to provide an immediate counter blast to it.
That having been achieved I quite agree that we must now enter into
constructive debate on how the wide range of issues should be
addressed. I am sure that our librarian colleagues would also wish to
enter into that debate given their specialisms and different modes of
working. I am glad to see from Justin that these are not set in stone
and are just possible options to be debated. I also welcome
Elizabeth's information on the Caring for Our Collections Report and
the opportunities to be afforded to comment on this, in addition to the NCA's response.
I was glad to see from the most recent edition of Arc that the there
has been a round table conference of most of the professional bodies
within our sector to discuss providing the profession with a stronger
more unified voice. These are the sort of developments which we need
to have if we are to provide a very strong creditable contribution to
the debate on our future.
I was appalled to read of Alan Davies experience at Wigan and was very concerned not to see any mention of Alan having received professional
support from any of the bodies who could have provided it. I can only
hope that he did receive it but it was behind the scenes.
My main concern remains is how we convey to the policy makers our
fundamental underlying role and contribution to both our employers and
the national heritage whilst accepting that the new technologies,
methods of working and externally developed national policies such as
social inclusion can be absorbed into our working lives. Further more,
as in all the professions, the very diversity of who we work for and
functions we perform for those employers, means that not all these
issues will be relevant to everyone.
So a final thought. How do we have this debate and ensure that as many
as possible can participate and contribute to it. I don't have the
answer but I am not currently aware of one forum where we could all
contribute views, debate those views and the issues, and come up with
a consensus which can then be taken forward to be debated with MLA.
As always a very personal view point.
