I have been approached by Lifelong Leaarning UK for comments on a
questionnaire which it intendede to circulate to archives servives to
gather information on the composition of the work force.

I would emphahsise that the questionnaire will be going to all UK archive
services LLUK can identify in the near future, and what we need at the
moment is some comments from heads of archive services about the
suitability of the form. I have circulated the form to several other local
authority archivists but LLUK would like comments form other areas of the
sector, such as business, HE etc so could I ask anyone interested in
helping to read the email below and follow the link to the form. If this
does not allow you access, email Zeeshan Rahman [[log in to unmask]]
who will be able to send you the link to the draft.

Any comments are needed by Wednesday 4th July, so apologies if this
deadline is too tight to enable you to be involved at this stage, but as I
say the final form of the survey will be fully distributed in the near
future. Thanks in advance to anyone able to comment at this stage.

Hi,

We are about to conduct an online survey with various types of archives
across England (and possibly the other UK countries in the near future) to
collect profiling information about their staff. I have developed a
questionnaire for this study, which has already incorporated feedback from
the Society of Archivists and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
However, it is imperative that this questionnaire is tested in order to
identify any problems before the survey starts. Therefore, I will be very
grateful if you can test the questionnaire and provide any feedback that
could help us improve it. I will do my best to incorporate as much of your
feedback into this before it goes live.

There are two main elements that I would like you to look at:
• Problems relating to the questionnaire itself e.g. routing problems,
layout etc
• Problems relating to the question wording, comprehension, difficulty in
providing answers

Please make a note of any problems that you encounter and inform me about
these either on the phone or through an email.

At this stage, you can simply estimate the answers for your service or can
make them up if not working in an archive. However, the key is to consider
the questions and think about problems that you or others could face in
completing this questionnaire.

I will be grateful if you can go through the questionnaire and provide any
feedback to me by Wednesday the 4th of July 2007.

Please start by looking at the email below, which will be sent to
respondents asking them to complete the survey. Then click on the link
within the email to start the survey.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for your help.

Staff Survey of Archives

Dear Recipient,

Lifelong Learning UK is carrying out a study to learn about staff working
in archives. This study is supported by groups and organisations such as
the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, the Society of Archivists and
the Association of Chief Archivists in Local Government.

We have asked many organisations to help us with this study by taking part
in an online survey and would be very grateful if you would help us by
completing this questionnaire. The study will provide essential
information on the profile of staff working in archives. Together with
other research, this study will allow us to make recommendations on how
training requirements can be best met within the sector as a whole.

All the information you provide will be treated as confidential in
accordance with the Data Protection Act. You will not be identified in any
research reports. The reports we produce will be available through our
website at end of the project. It is important to the success of this
study that everyone chosen takes part.

We recommend that the Head of the Archives Service completes this
questionnaire. If you feel that another person in your organisation is
better suited to complete this survey then please send this email to them.

It will be appreciated if the survey is completed by 3rd of July 2007.
Please click on the link below to start the survey now.
