JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:	ENVIRONMENTAL STATISTICIAN	REF:	DNF/36/07

PAY BAND:	6/7	CONTRACT:	PERMANENT

SALARY:	£30,252 TO £50,882 PA	HOURS:	FULL TIME

LOCATION:	LOWESTOFT	ANNUAL LEAVE:	25 days, 30 days after 7 years service

PURPOSE OF JOB

An innovative and adaptable individual is required to support the development of statistical research and statistical capability at Cefas. The post will have a research and development focus, with an emphasis on the development and dissemination of new statistical methods to support Cefas activities including the assessment of human activities on the marine environment, the effects of the environment on humans and the design of marine monitoring programmes.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The post will involve active collaboration with a range of scientists working on issues including climate change, fisheries conservation, radiobiology, marine food webs and pollution. It will also involve the provision of statistical advice to non-statisticians and the opportunity to support or lead funding bids for statistical and related research grants. You will also participate in, and lead, expert groups that support national and international science programmes and will contribute to the work of a small team of professional statisticians located at the different Cefas laboratories. At PB7 you would be expected to have primary responsibility for leading and developing new areas of research, in many cases with new external collaborators, and the outputs of this research would be expected to have consistent and significant international influence on the development of statistical methods and their application. At PB6 you would share responsibility for developing new areas of research and the outputs would be expected to have some international influence on the application of statistics. The main duties of the post will be:

·	Develop and publish new statistical methods relevant to the research and monitoring interests of Cefas
·	Collaborate with ecologists and mathematical modellers on research projects that seek to identify how humans affect (e.g. fishing, dredging, pollution) and are affected by (e.g. climate variation and change) the environment
·	Contribute to a small team providing statistical advice and support to non-statisticians
·	Lead and support funding bids for statistical and applied environmental research projects
·	To contribute to national and international expert groups

You must be creative, and possess a broad range of modern statistical skills that could include, but are not limited to, multivariate and time-series analysis, geostatistics, extreme value modelling and Bayesian methods. Your work must be well regarded and influential at national (PB6) or international (PB7) levels, as evidenced by your publication record and uptake of methods you have developed. For those being considered at the pay band 7 level we would also prefer the candidate to have experience of leading a productive research group. The proven ability to direct, plan, organise and complete projects to deadline is essential and you must have the ability to communicate with scientists and non-specialists, both verbally and in writing, and to develop independent research. Experience in environmental, fisheries or biological science and knowledge of packages such as S-plus/ R or SAS and programming languages such as FORTRAN and C++ would be preferable.
