Applications are invited for a number of PhD studentships in the
Statistics Group, Department of Mathematics, Bristol University, UK.
The Statistics Group was the only one in the UK to achieve the highest
possible rating in the latest national Research Assessment Exercise.
Studentships will be restricted to students of a high quality - the
normal entry requirement is the equivalent of a 1st or high 2:1 at
undergraduate level.
In particular, we offer 2 studentships with 4 years of funding
provided by the SuSTaIn (Statistics underpinning Science, Technology
and Industry) initiative, to cover a 1 year MRes course followed by
a 3 year PhD degree. Full funding (fees and maintenance) is offered
to UK and EU candidates, while non-EU candidates would have to
supplement their fees, though other funding opportunities are available
to cover this. The studentships include a tax-free stipend of 12,600
pounds per year, with a supplement whose amount is to be confirmed (this
has been around 1,500 pounds per year in previous years).
The department also offers a number of studentships for 3 year and
3.5 year PhD degree courses.
Study is based around research themes of Applied Probability,
Bayesian Modelling and Analysis, Behavioural Biology, Monte Carlo,
Multiscale Methods, Nonparametric Regression, Optimisation Under
Uncertainty, Statistical Bioinformatics, Statistical Signal Processing
and Time Series.
Details of some possible PhD projects are available at the website

along with a PDF document containing more information concerning
the group, including eligibility for funding. Please contact the
