Project title: Statistical modelling of multilevel survey data
Summary:
The population survey is a tool that is often used to learn about the health, and lifestyles, of a group of individuals. Typically, understanding the data gathered in a population survey will be more complicated than, say, that produced in a clinical trial that compares standard and experimental therapies. This added complexity arises for several reasons - sample sizes are large, the data are often binary, categorical or ordinal, posing analytical problems, and there are natural groupings, or clusters, of similar individuals in the survey and these have to be accounted for in an analysis. This project sets out to help scientists understand large, multilevel surveys by providing statistical methods and models designed to handle this type of data.
The project is based around a large health survey carried out in South Wales, which we expect to be extended to a longitudinal study in the near future.
The objectives are:
1. To devise graphical methods for visualising large, multidimensional
multilevel data in raw form.
2. To determine the usefulness of ordinal models for multilevel survey data.
3. To devise methods for quantifying and summarising uncertainty at
different levels of the hierarchy.
4. To apply methods developed in the research to the survey data to
obtain a better understanding of the effects of socio-economic
and environmental factors on physical and mental health.
