Innovative, forward-thinking, experienced Statisticians – Respiratory and
Psychiatry Centres for Excellence in Drug Discovery (CEDD)
The Psychiatry and Respiratory Centres for Excellence in Drug Discovery
(CEDDs) are the GSK business units accountable for the early phase
psychiatry and respiratory portfolios.
Each CEDD has strategic and operational responsibility to GSK for their
respective disease area portfolios from Lead Optimisation through Proof of
(Clinical) Concept (PoC). That is, they bring well-defined accountability
and entrepreneurial drive to manage the progression of compounds in
the "middle" of the pipeline. While drawing from the broader resources of
the organisation, the CEDDs bridge the conventional gap between discovery
and development and bring together medicinal chemists, biologists and
physicians who concentrate on specific disease groupings.
Details
•Working closely with the CEDD in either Respiratory or Psychiatry, you
will help to progress compounds from Candidate Selection, through First
Time in Man, and onto the end of Phase II Proof of Concept. You will have
the chance to interface at the cutting edge of scientific discovery, and
see candidate molecules through from their initial discovery until their
clinical concept has been proven.
•Your key duty will be to drive and embed innovative statistical
methodology (including, but not limited to: bayesian inference, adaptive
clinical trial design, and multivariate analysis of clinical endpoints)
across the entire portfolio. Another important function within clinical
development will be to lead the deployment of rigorous statistical
approaches to experimental medicine and the validation of biomarkers. You
may also be required to take responsibility for individual clinical
projects.
•You will ensure statistical strategies are appropriate, effective and
robust. This includes supporting innovative approaches personally and
providing intellectual leadership to others in the statistics group.
•Using your strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication
abilities, you will explain novel and standard methods both to fellow
statisticians and to scientific and clinical colleagues, at all levels in
the organisation.
•You will optimise compound development plans, review/co-author protocols,
analysis plans and study reports, either personally or through the
oversight of fellow statisticians.
Basic Qualifications
•Masters in Statistics (or equivalent) with related life science
experience in statistical design, analysis and programming, and a
demonstrated track record of influencing research and direction.
•Good communication skills with the ability to explain complex statistical
approaches to scientists.
Preferred Qualifications
•PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics or Biostatistics.
•Experience of working as a consultant statistician
•A track record of statistical innovation, which may have been
demonstrated through an academic career. (e.g. a Ph.D. in a relevant
subject and a publication history). Candidates who can demonstrate a
record of applied statistical consultancy will be at an advantage
•Ideally, the candidate will have related experience working within a
pharmaceutical, agricultural or academic medical research setting, and a
keen interest in the clinical pharmacology environment of drug discovery
and development.
•Demonstrated ability to assume a leadership role, especially in
championing innovative statistical designs and analyses. Knowledge of
nonlinear regression, adaptive designs, and bayesian tools and methods
would be advantageous.
•Ability to work both in a largely self-directed manner and also across
international and functional boundaries.
