Statistician/Genetic Statistician (vacancy ref. 13261)
___________________________________________
A full-time statistician is required to join an internationally recognised
multi-disciplinary team utilizing genetic variation to establish causal
relationships in population-based health studies. The research team, led by
Professor George Davey Smith, has recently been enhanced by being awarded
an MRC Centre, the Centre for Causal Analyses in Translational Epidemiology
(CAiTE). The research group is based in the Department of Social Medicine
at the University of Bristol, which has a strong medical statistics group
led by Professor Jonathan Sterne and collaborative links with the
University?s Mathematics department. The major focus of the post will be
on the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), although
there will be collaborative work with other studies.
Genetic epidemiology within the ALSPAC study has so far focused on a
candidate gene approach and has contributed to important findings with
respect to genetic variants underlying common complex disease outcomes. We
are now moving to genome wide associations studies within the cohort, while
continuing candidate gene studies. You will work with the genetics
database managers and other statisticians to analyse the genotype data in
relation to the extremely detailed phenotype data in the ALSPAC cohort. The
use of the ALSPAC genetic resource and the analysis of genetic data will
require co-ordination and you will be expected to provide this role. You
will also lead the biostatistical input to quality control the genetics
data. You will be encouraged to develop independent research interests and
write up research findings.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent
contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research
experience. Further information can be found at
