> Applications are invited for the role of statistician on the
> London Multicentre Research Ethics Committee
>
> The London NHS Multicentre Research Ethics Committee (London MREC) is
> one of the independent advisory committees of the London Strategic
> Health Authority. Its task is to consider the ethics of proposed
> research projects involving human subjects, their tissue or their data
> and that will take place, generally, within the NHS. The key duty of
> a REC is to protect the interests of patients and other research
> subjects and ensure that the research is ethical. Medical research
> cannot proceed without the approval of a REC.
>
> Each committee has a membership of between 15 and 18 members who are
> drawn from the general public, and professions allied to health and
> social sciences. Each member stays for a maximum of ten years, but
> can leave at any time s/he chooses.
>
> The London MREC meets monthly at a venue in central London on the
> fourth Wednesday of each month from 9.30am to about 1.30pm. Members
> are also expected to give adequate time before each meeting for
> preparation - usually from 4 to 6 hours for the statistician - and to
> attend a minimum of two training events each year. There is no
> remuneration, but travel expenses are paid. Refreshments, including a
> sandwich lunch, are provided free of charge.
>
> Attendance at most meetings is essential in order to raise issues with
> researchers who attend the meeting as well as answer queries of other
> REC members on design and statistical matters. For the occasional
> meeting that cannot be attended by the statistician, either written
> notes on the projects being reviewed need to be provided to the REC
> administrator before the meeting or a deputy found to attend on your
> behalf.
>
> The role entails:
> * Ensuring that the trial design and statistical methodology for
> analysis presented in each research protocol are both appropriate and
> ethical
> * Ensuring that the sample size for each protocol has been
> correctly calculated
> * Reviewing and advising on issues relating to study design,
> including adequate power, use of CIs in descriptive studies,
> confidentiality, data handling and storage.
> * Raising any other ethical issues
>
> For the statistician, essential criteria are
> * a good understanding of the different methods used in clinical
> trials
> * the ability to calculate sample sizes of both clinical trials
> and health surveys and
> * an understanding of ethics as applicable to health research.
>
> Previous experience of working in or with the NHS, another REC, or
> health-based research will be an advantage, as will knowledge of the
> Data Protection Act and issues relating to data handling and
> confidentiality. Full induction training will be given.
