Animal Health Trust
POST-DOCTORAL QUANTITATIVE GENETICIST
The Animal Health Trust is a leading UK-based academic veterinary
institute and animal charity, dedicated to promoting animal welfare
through veterinary research. It has strong clinical and educational
commitments and state of the art small animal and equine referral
clinics on its site, which is located four miles from Newmarket. The AHT
offers a challenging and rewarding environment in which to work.
A 2-year post-doctoral position is available to work on the development
of breeding schemes in pedigree dogs. The project aims to provide
science-based advice and tools for helping breeders eradicate disease
genes whilst minimising the loss of genetic variation in other genes
based on theories of genetic contributions. The project will demonstrate
how this state-of-the-art approach to selection can be applied to canine
populations. Data on hip dysplasia in Labrador Retrievers and
syringomyelia and mitral valve disease in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
will be used as an illustration. The role will include liaising with
participating breed clubs to demonstrate how optimal breeding strategies
can be applied in practice. The position will be based at the Animal
Health Trust, Newmarket with regular visits to work with Professor John
Woolliams at the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh. The ideal candidate will
have a PhD in quantitative or statistical genetics. An interest in the
application of research to practical animal breeding would also be
advantageous.
