Hi All
I initially did not respond because I was pretty sure there was nothing
that would pick up image plagiarism. It's an issue of great interest to
us since UAL is the biggest Art and Design University in Europe.
One of my colleagues consulted the Quality Manager in Graphic Design who
said:
"a simple answer to that from me is that i don't know of any, that
doesn't mean there aren't any. having said that i can't see how
software would be that intelligent. it would have to recognise
styles. there would have to be a library of sources to compare with.
i can't see how it is possible at the moment."
This seemed to confirm my own initial response although I wonder if
patented designs are held in a database?
My second reason for contributing is, however, that, with Susan Orr at
York St John and Joan Mullin at the University of Texas at Austin, I
have a funded project on non-text based plagiarism. Our aim is not to
find some 'catching mechanism' but to develop ways of working with
students in a range of art and design disciplines to help staff and
students clarify what is/is not acceptable and design teaching materials
to help explain the boundaries to students. This is funded by JISC and
the materials will go on the JISC website this summer but if anyone
would like more details in the meantime, please contact me.
Best
Margo
