I'd create a simple random number list (the same length as the total
number of cases you have in SPSS) in Excel (using the function
'=RAND()', I don't know if SPSS can do this as I haven't looked),
paste it into a new column in SPSS and then sort your data by this
variable.
I would imagine that this would be fine for most purposes, though I
know that there are some objections to the true 'randomness' of the
random number function in Excel. There are forums online and
everything- I found them by mistake, I swear...
