Hello Caroline
As Peter Jackson has said, a number of "lodging shops" survive in the
North Pennines in various states of disrepair. The Killhope one (which
dates from the early 1860's) is typical of a moderate sized shop in the
Pennines, accommodating not just miners' lodgings but also a small office,
tool store, blacksmith's shop and stable. Typically, as at Killhope, the
shop was very near to the mine entrance.
Shops were usually two-storey, with lodging rooms on the first floor.
There are some much bigger shops in the North Pennines (eg a sadly
dilapidated one at Coalcleugh) and others which are just one room up and
one room down.
Recently several have been converted into cabins for grouse shooting
parties, as they are ideally situated in remote upland areas.
Bye for now
Ian
