Woolly and repetetive. I suspect that I'm not the only person who read the
chartership paperwork from CILIP and kept thinking "I'm sure I read that a
few pages ago". And 1,000 words isn't a lot for reflecting on the way you
work, even if you can add footnotes to point to items in your portfolio. My
last attempt at a commentary on some of the things I've done and why far
exceeded the limit and it only covered about three aspects of my work. I've
still got at least a year to go before I submit, as I only work 20 hpw, so
my work experience period is extended. Things may well change some more, so
I think I need to re-learn how to write a good precis! (No, don't ask how
long ago I sat my 'O' levels - though the fact that it was GCEs speaks for
itself.)
My line manager is dismayed that the gold standard qualification for the
profession in which she has worked for years no longer requires proof of
competence in the bread-and-butter skills of cataloguing, indexing, etc.,
but asks for a reflective essay. I know that's the way in many professions
now (as a health librarian, I issue books on reflective practice in nursing
pretty regularly!) but I can see why more traditionally-minded colleagues
don't much like it.
That's my tuppence-worth for today.

Subject: Re: Structuring Portfolio
Hi All
Yes this portfolio is difficult because it seems so "woolly". It would
be much more straightforward if the BPK was re-written into a set of
standards, such as one has when doing a PGCE portfolio to gain Qualified
Teacher Status, or an NVQ management course.
The standards would set out, clearly, what is expected in numbered
bullet points in sections with the evidence directly referenced to the
relevant standard.
This provides a structure not only for the candidate but also for
evaluation - ensuring uniform standards across portfolios and the
evaluation process.
Cheers
Wendy
