The university senate of the University of Kelaniya has just approved a
Diploma in Disability Studies, which will be upgraded to a Bachelors
program in the future. The Diploma will start in August 2007.
The program is based on the social model of disability. The university is
extremely resource poor, with only ONE international data base being
subscribed too. Most of our students books in the main library are dated
from the 1960's to 1970's! Any new books are often photocopied. I have
been trying whilst here to get our students and faculty to gain access to
international debates and ideas so we can contribute a South Asian
disability studies perspective....Undertaking research and teaching
in a third world context means that many of the facilities that western
nations take for granted... are not available to most of us."
I am asking that if any academic have old copies of texts, or publishers
remainders (or even old books of reading) could they send them to us in Sri
Lanka. We have five books in our shelves directly related to disability
studies. We are currently upgrading our web page and will forward this
onto the list when it is complete.

This is a great opportunity for us to take part in making disability
studies truly international.
