Apologies for any cross-posting. I would be really grateful if you would
pass on details of this PhD studentship to final year undergrads and/or
Master’s students who might be interested in applying (details are
attached and cut and pasted below). The studentship (fully funded) is
particularly likely to appeal to those with an interest in medical
anthropology and/or ethnicity (South Asia). There’s scope to do
something stereotypically anthropological, but the studentship also
opens the door to the possibility of following a career path in health
services research.

An ethnographic investigation of the Prevention of Diabetes and Obesity
in South Asians-(PODOSA) trial
Postgraduate Studentship in Health Services Research
Chief Scientist Office (Scottish Executive Health Department)
3 years (Sep 2007-2010)
£12,608 per annum + tuition fees + research expenses
We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic social scientist to fill
the above studentship which has been funded by the Scottish Executive
Health Department. The proposed project is an ethnographic investigation
of a family based trial for the prevention of type 2 diabetes in
Pakistanis and Indians (through the promotion of dietary changes and
physical activity). Whilst the specific aims will be refined by the
student, the study, broadly, will look at the experiences of families
who participate in the trial, the trial’s broader impact on family and
community dynamics, and, reasons for retention or withdrawal from the
trial. The research will be undertaken in the Indian and/or Pakistani
communities in Edinburgh and/or Glasgow where the trial is taking place
and will comprise in-depth interviewing and participant observation.
Research training will be available, including (if necessary) courses in
Punjabi, Urdu or Hindi and advanced qualitative data analysis
The student will be based in the Research Unit in Health, Behaviour &
Change, Medical School, at the University of Edinburgh. He/she will be
co-supervised by Dr Julia Lawton (Research Unit in Health, Behaviour &
Change) and Dr Aditya Bharadwaj (Department of Sociology, the University
of Edinburgh). Additional supervisory support will be provided by Dr
Hannah Bradby, Department of Sociology and Institute of Health,
University of Warwick.
The studentship provides registration fees, an annual maintenance grant
of £12,608, and research expenses.
All interested applicants must have a good, first degree (2i or above)
and/or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. social
anthropology, sociology). A keen interest in undertaking applied,
health-relevant research is essential.
Applicants should submit the following documents:

skills relate to the proposed study
