Before anyone else points it out - I realised after sending this that the messages relating to mentoring came from the mentors list & not LIS-CILIP-REG. However, the points made are still valid, and it might also be worth Chartership candidates looking at the archives of this list from time to time too.

I wonder if we are in danger of re-inventing the wheel here - see the responses below relating to mentors which I've just picked up from the list - posted November 2006.
I haven't time to respond in any depth now to the big discussions going on about how to compile portfolios, though the archives of this list will probably provide answers to some of the questions being raised, but as a mentor I think that one of our most important roles is to encourage you (Chartership candidates) to think critically about your role, whatever it is, and about whatever you do which relates to your professional work.
In fact, I think there are definite advantages to working in a different setting because it helps to make sure you explain clearly what their role is and how it fits into the overall organisation. At the end of the day, the assessors aren't going to have experience in every kind of organisation, and it is them who you have to convince!

I agree that you can mentor outside your own area of experience. I'm currently working in a 'solo' library in a (nursing) NDPB and am mentoring 2 school librarians. (There would be no other library quite the same as 'mine' anyway.) I think it does enable greater detachment - plus, in terms of the mentor's CPD, it's a wonderful learning opportunity. Our role is to make sure the portfolio etc meets CILIP requirements, not necessarily to have in-depth knowledge of the specific area in which the mentee works - and there are, as Chloe says, common issues in every situation, to which you can bring your own experience.

Subject: Re: Mentors for non-library environments
I think there is a problem with the CILIP site information for mentors not allowing enough specificity (e.g. I was initially uneasy about mentoring anyone working in a sector I had never worked in, or who wanted frequent face to face meetings which required me to travel outside Glasgow during work hours), which would need to be taken up with CILIP.
However, now being on my second mentee I think there is something to be said for thinking outside the box a bit and at least considering mentoring people from unfamiliar sectors and professions. Workplaces and practices differ massively even in supposedly identical sectors (e.g. NHS libraries) and I'm coming to think that familiarity with the mentee's workplace isn't necessarily a good thing as it can be tempting to offer advice and make assumptions without actually making them explain just what the problems/issues are. It is down to the mentee as well to identify development needs and opportunities rather than sitting back and getting given a training sheet by the mentor. Plus issues such as comunication problems with a manager, team leading, time management, mapping service needs or whatever are found in most work situations.

Hi
I wholeheartedly agree with your comments Anne. As an information management graduate working as a web developer within an IT department, it's difficult to see how a mentor in, for example, the public library sector would have a good understanding of the day to day issues of my job.
My boss has just qualified as a mentor for this very reason.

Hello,
As someone who has just joined this list and ist just planning to start
chartership, I have to say that I have found all the Cilip guidance on
chartering, structuring the portfolio etc extremely unhelpful -
"somewhat vague" certainly sums up my first impressions! I am hoping the
Cilip courses help clarify this, but my first impressions have been that
quite a lot of work could be put in by Cilip etc to make the guidance
more helpful. I don't even have a real impression of the workload I need
to put in or how much time this could take, which isn't exactly helpful
when considering starting chartering.
On the mentoring point, I imagine they could be very helpful but again
the guidance seems a little woolly - there seems a lack of structured
information on when to submit applications, when to contact a mentor
etc. Also, as a law librarian, I was extremely disappointed to see that
there are hardly any corporate or even government librarians available
as mentors. I can't help but think it would be easier to have a mentor
who worked in the same field as you and who would have a good knowledge
of the potential areas of your day to day job which could be used for
chartering. Has anyone else had this problem? Or have they felt that a
mentor from any field of librarianship was just as useful? I'd be very
interested to hear - at the moment my line manager is considering
qualifying as a mentor to try and help solve this problem, but of course
this has a knock-on effect for me when it comes to understanding where
to start!
Anne

Hope people don't mind me butting in as a lurker - but have
people found (or not) their mentors any help on this issue? As a mentor
myself it should be part of the role to assist here.
