Hi, Anthony,
The call for applications sees it as a full-time studentship. I've
said to Jan off-list that I would guess that a very very strong
applicant might be in a position to negotiate; but that's only a
guess, and there would have to be a very powerful argument indeed,
not least because the historical research and exploration to be based
here at the Archive and Study Centre is intended in part to support
and supplement empirical research which is already going on, and both
wings of research are intended in part to feed directly back into the
development and practice of the therapeutic community involved.
Indeed, already has. So - with that practical purpose to the research
- there is a considerable, concrete impetus behind a full-time studentship.
Also, I think it would be extremely difficult to pursue the project
as envisaged from a distance. The initial phase will, in any event,
involve helping to organise and catalogue the archives of the
therapeutic community, which are held here. There will be oral
history elements, and intensive research in the archives, and it is
difficult to see how all of that could be done from a distance.
On the positive side, the person who is awarded the studentship will
have a base here, and it is a beautiful place to be based. I was
listening to the recording with Akinobu Takabayashi and noticed the
birds in the background. We kind of take that for granted here, along
with the green, the trees, the amazing night skies.
Also on a positive note: If there are people interested in pursuing
work at this level, on whatever basis, let's make contact, and let's
see what the needs and possibilities are. Perhaps with enough weight
of interest, experience and vision we can develop something. Who knows what.
all the best,
Craig
