General Chairs: Stephan Winter (U Melbourne), Benjamin Kuipers (U Texas)
Local Co-Chairs: Matt Duckham (U Melbourne) and Lars Kulik (U Melbourne)
Chair of Doctoral Colloquium: Alexander Klippel (Penn State U)
KEY DATES
=========
COSIT’07 Workshops 19 September 2007
COSIT’07 Technical Sessions 20-22 September 2007
COSIT’07 Doctoral Colloquium 23 September 2007
Early bird registration deadline 22 June 2007
TOPIC AND TARGET GROUP
======================
COSIT’07 is concerned with theoretical aspects of space, time, and
spatial information. Of special interest are spaces of geographic and
environmental scales in which humans make decisions and carry out
actions. Spatial information theory also deals with the formal and
natural description of processes and events in spatial environments,
thus providing a foundation for the design and construction of
geographic information systems (GIS) and for spatial information in
general. Empirical investigations, formal models, and the use of spatial
information technologies reveal a large number of interesting research
questions which require an interdisciplinary approach for their solution.
COSIT’07 will bring together researchers from many disciplines and
topics, in particular:
* Cognitive, Perceptual, and Environmental Psychology
* Geography and Geoinformation Science
* Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cognitive Science
* Engineering and Human Factors
* Cognitive Anthropology, Psycholinguistics and Linguistics
* Ontology of the Geospatial Domain
* Architecture, Planning, and Environmental Design
CONFERENCE STYLE AND PROGRAM
============================
COSIT’s trademark is a single track conference with extensive exchange
and interaction during and beyond the presentations. Staying together at
a secluded location is one of the key factors to achieve this atmosphere.
Papers are selected through a rigorous review of full paper
contributions by internationally renowned reviewers. An acceptance rate
of 27% in 2007 promises a stimulating and exciting event. The
proceedings are published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer
Science series. The day before the conference, international workshops
on topics relevant to the conference are offered. A Doctoral Colloquium,
facilitated by a small panel of experienced researchers, will conclude
the conference. It is intended as a forum where PhD students can meet,
present their research, and hold discussions with others at a similar
stage in their careers.
REGISTRATION
============
Prospective participants can now register at http://www.cosit.info.
Don’t miss the early bird rates valid through 22 June 2007.
KEYNOTES
========
* Deborah McGuinness (Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Stanford
University) is a leading expert in knowledge representation and
reasoning languages and systems and has worked in ontology creation and
evolution environments for over 20 years. Most recently, Deborah is best
known for her leadership role in semantic web research, and for her work
on explanation, trust, and applications of semantic web technology,
particularly for scientific applications.
* Kim Marriott (Information Technology, Monash University) is
interested in the formalization of understanding and reasoning with
diagrammatic notations such as finite state diagrams or house plans, in
particular, grammatical and logical approaches to the specification and
recognition of such visual languages.
* Mandyam Srinivasan (Queensland Brain Institute, University of
Queensland) is Australian Federation Fellow, elected to the Australian
Academy of Science in 1995 and to the Royal Society of London in 2001.
“Srini cracked the code of vision in the world of bees, demonstrating
that the motion of the passing landscape provides the bee with a third
dimension to vision. This is how bees regulate their flight and ensure a
safe landing” (from a laudation on the occasion of the 2006 Prime
Minister’s Prize for Sciene).

===================
The conference will be held at the Melbourne Business School in Mt
Eliza, Melbourne, Australia. The conference venue is located above the
cliffs of Port Phillip Bay, with wonderful views, an English park
landscape, and a private beach. Mount Eliza is about one and a half
hour's drive from Melbourne's international airport Tullamarine (MEL). A
shuttle service will operate from the airport to the conference site at
Mt Eliza. Melbourne is well-connected, with direct flights from major
cities around the world. September is low season for traveling to
Australia and several airlines offer budget tickets. The latest travel
and conference information will appear on the COSIT'07 web site
http://www.cosit.info as it becomes available.
