Whose responsibility is it anyway? Wellbeing, Citizenship and Government
Wednesday 13th June, 1-2.30 pm, Social Market Foundation, 11 Tufton
Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3QB.
The British have, to coin a phrase, never had it so good. Greater
prosperity, more personal freedom and better public services should rank
us amongst the most content people in the world. In fact, if the research
is to be believed, we have seldom been unhappier, nor more disenchanted
with and disengaged from our democratic processes. Why should this be the
case, and what lies behind it - a failure of politics or a failure of
citizenship?
Peter Bradley, former MP for The Wrekin and author of the new SMF
publication, AntiSocial Britain and the Challenge of Citizenship, Matthew
Taylor, former Chief of Strategy to Tony Blair and Chief Executive of the
Royal Society of Arts, and the Financial Times's John Lloyd will discuss
whether 'Big Citizenship' might provide an answer to our social and
political disaffection, look at how we might manage expectations where
Government is concerned, ask to what extent the media is responsible for
contributing towards a 'culture of disappointment' and consider how we
might reenergise our civil society.
Copies of AntiSocial Britain will be available at the launch.
There is no charge for this event. To attend, please contact Myriam Bem
