it's one of my favourite stories by Tolkien, in the much-disrespected
Silmarillion. its primary motif is fate (also often referred to by
JRRT as 'doom'), & the complexities that arise from avoiding, tempting
or otherwise rebelling against it. it draws greatly from very old
stories in a similar vein, of which I feel obliged to mention the
tragedy of Kullervo in the Kalevala.
