Dear NGN,
Now is a good time to advertise the services on the MASTS monitoring
project. We have been working alongside UKERNA (that's JANET UK!!),
Steve Williams and David Salmon in particular, throughout our project
and this is a good time to share some findings. Capturing traffic at
10gig is not simply a case of plugging in a box and off you go. We
have spent some time on this project dealing with technical and legal
capture issues, back haul to a storage site and storing the captured
data. When we're fully running we will have available a number of
different data sources, and a number of different filters on this data.
What we would now like from the community is some idea of what sort
of filters would help your research. For example:
1) Flow data in a netflow (or netflow-like) form.
2) Packet traces (anonymised IP addresses).
3) Sampled traces - with specific sampling criteria
4) TCP-specific information - ACK numbers, inter arrival times,
packet sizes
5) PDF/CDFs of the above.
We are in a position to engage further with the community and to
further network monitoring in the UK.
An architectural presentation will be made at Cosener's this year.
Iain Phillips on behalf of the EPSRC UKLIGHT MASTS project.
