I think Hugh Torrens is (or was) an academic (probably a geologist) at Bath
University. I can shed no light on the persons named, but the name Evetts
rings a bell. I have come across the name concerning the purchase of an
early Newcomen engine in connection with a coal mine at Pelshall, near
Walsall. These details are from memory, but I can check them if of
interest.

Subject: WILLIAM EVETTS SHEFFIELD, REQUEST.
Hi, list members,
I have received the following request, from Barbara Sheffield.
If anyone is able to help, I can forward on the collated
information, in say a month's time.
John W Hine, (Mole)
:-
I am researching a William Evetts Sheffield who was involved in geology,
minerology and smelting in the late 1700s in England. I came across your
web site and your 2004 Newsletter 50 that makes mention of him and there is
a footnote indicating that the information came from Hugh Torrens.
I would be interesting in knowing what sources Mr. Torrens has and whether
he might share any additional information.
W.E. Sheffield is my third great grandfather. I am a descendent of his son
John who was a naval architect. I know that WES had another son Charles who
was also very involved in geology and minerology and, in addition to the
family connections to a smelting operation in Cromford, Derbyshire, Charles
also went to Egypt at the request of the Pasha around 1825 to search for
coal and other minerals.
Your newsletter story talks about another William Sheffield who was the
Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum from 1772-1795. It think that William was
W.E. Sheffield's uncle [brother of WES' father Jonathan].
If Mr. Torrens has any additional information he can share, I would love to
have it. You can reach me at the email address below.
Much appreciation
Barbara
