In researching various sources of production data for Cornish and Devon
mines for a proposed updated version of "Cornish Mines" for Exeter
University, I am currently working on the Tin Ticketings which took place
in the 1820's to 1840's. Although not directly relevant to this project,
it is noticable that the black tin produced from Levant imposed extremely
high penalties from the smelters, in contrast to mines working in the
granite at the time - East Levant, Wheal Owles and Wheal Maitland - which
produced good quality black tin.
Can anyone with a working knowledge of Geevor & Levant before closure
say if this problem still occurred in the modern killas workings of
Geevor, or was it eliminated with modern dressing/smelting practice?
