medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The fact that he was "venerable" instead of "saint" was noted in the MA as well.
Perhaps Latinists can cite chapter and verse (and correct spelling!) for the anecdote in which
a monk is trying to devise an inscription for the tomb. He comes up with something like
"Hic iacet in fossa" and needs the next line to end in "ossa" -
an angel suggests (or perhaps fills in?)
"Bedae Venerabilis" ossa
Whether "sancti Bedae" would have been against the metrical rules my latin
is not good enough to determine . . .

In my exasperated haste, I failed to mention that Bede is one of the last designated Doctors of the Church, and he is the only Englishman to appear in Dante's Paradiso.

We call him Venerable Bede because that has been his honorific title even during his era He is, however, a canonized saint in both the Anglican and Roman catholic calendars.

Memorial of St Bede.

If he was a saint, then why did we call him the Venerable Bede? Or is this a
different person?
