CHANNEL 4 - THE FIRST 25 YEARS
Conference
Saturday 17 -Sunday 18 November 2007
BFI Southbank, London
Channel 4 first started broadcasting in November 1982. Over the years the channel has transformed the experience of television in Britain, not to mention the television industry itself. Never far from controversy it could be argued that C4 has played a part in changing wider attitudes in British society, for good or ill, and debates continue to rage about its programmes and its policies.
As Channel 4 reaches 25, this major academic conference organised by the BFI assesses its impact and influence on British television and culture. Leading scholars will give papers and share their research, analysing programmes from Channel 4 News to The Tube, from Out on Tuesday to G.B.H and Big Brother.
Keynote speakers are; Profesor John Ellis, Professor Georgina Born, and Dr Catherine Johnson.
Other confirmed speakers include: Dorothy Hobson, Anita Biressi and Heather Nunn, Jane Arthurs, Julia Hallam, Lez Cooke, Michael Tracey, Rod Stoneman, Tony Purvis, and many others discussing the channel's past, present and future.
