In his image-essay about the city and visual culture, Frederic Stout
wrote that photography “is arguably the single most characteristic
medium of expression and representation of the modern period”, and that
it was “urban subjects”, “the inescapable social and physical reality of
the modern city”, that “captured photography’s unique potential as an
expressive medium and gave photography its historic and artistic raison
d’être”.
With its focus on the relations between European photography and
European metropolises, this session welcomes 20-minute papers dealing
with photographic representations of the city, its processes and
vectors, its stages of development, its physical and social realities,
its institutions and structures of power, its lived practices and
experiences, the modes of perception it produces, the human trajectories
it frames, and how it enhances or deflates, and even frustrates the
common life and collective drama Lewis Mumford articulated to his
definition of the city in 1937.
