As mentioned earlier in this thread, we at Talis have been following
developments within Second Life with interest for many months.
We sponsor the Talis Cybrary City Island
[http://blogs.talis.com/panlibus/archives/2006/11/talis_helps_bri.php]
which was set up by the Alliance Second Life Library and maintained by
volunteers from all over the world. Cybrary City is an area for
individual libraries to set up offices and offer resources.
We have our own virtual office in Cybrary City, located on the ground
floor of the Talis tower, which we have been experimenting with linking
back to some of our resources, Panlibus, Cenote, our web site etc.
I attended an excellent Eduserv Symposium last week
[http://blogs.talis.com/panlibus/archives/2007/05/eduserv_symposi.php]
which looked in to virtual worlds in general and Second Life in
particular.
As to gaining access through firewalls, and institution policy, several
conversation I have had reflect the problems that Eric has had until one
of the courses at an institution include a Second Life component - then
for some reason the policy seems to be far easier to change.
Richard Wallis.
