I thought I'd provide a quick post of feedback on the afternoon excursion
into Second Life. All told I think that perhaps 20 people turned up and
spent some time wandering around - and those were just the ones who talked
to me or added me as a friend - the actual number could have been higher.
I started off by spending some time at the UCD library and was given a very
interesting tour of the resources by Gortadoo, then moved onto the
University of Hertfordshire virtual campus, which was very strange because I
was there in person recently and it was almost an exact duplicate. Certainly
to the extent that I could recognize where I was. I'd like to thank Penny in
particular for offering a very unscheduled tour to the dozen or so who
turned up.
It was an interesting experiment, and I think that a lot of people were
impressed by what can be achieved in a reasonably short period of time by a
small number of dedicated people.
Several people commented that it would be a really nice idea to do it again,
and one or two people who couldn't make it this afternoon are keen for an
opportunity to take their own look around, so I think there's clearly an
interest in looking at the possibilities in more depth.
Consequently - for those people who are interested; where should we take it
next? Regular meetings once a month? Or perhaps those librarians who are
actively doing things in Second Life might like to post to the list details
of any 'open days' they might plan?
In the meantime, if anyone wants their own guided tour from me (though I
should point out that I know very, very little), I'm more than happy to
arrange a time to meet and point out a few bits and pieces.
