Film and Video Heritage : Caring for Moving Image Collections
Wednesday 23rd May 2007
9.30am to 4.30pm
J Paul Getty Conservation Centre, Kingshill Way, Berkhamsted
(Berkhamsted is a half hour rail journey from Euston. The Conservation Centre is a short taxi ride or 20 minute walk from the station)
'Moving images and sounds have a huge power to involve and engage people, offering a direct experience that can help to foster a sense of place, time and community identity' but only if they survive!
Many important local or specialist collections of film and video are held by organisations with no access to specialist preservation expertise or advice. This one-day event is for you if you are not a specialist film archivist, but manage or work with even a small collection of film or video material
The day has been organised for MLA London by Patrick Russell, Senior Curator (non-fiction) at the British Film Institute. Excitingly the BFI is welcoming us to their specialist J Paul Getty Conservation Centre where much of the BFI National Archive collection is stored and worked on.
This event will look at the fundamentals of moving image archiving: acquisition procedures, viewing access and rights issues, storing, identifying, handling, preserving and copying film and video material. It builds on the training event run by MLA London and the BFI in December 2005 and will look in more detail at managing video collections, cataloguing and managing digitisation programmes.
The presentations will be illustrated by screenings and there will be a tour of the BFI National Archive's J Paul Getty Conservation Centre. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion with the BFI's expert specialist conservators and collection managers.
There will be a short presentation on London's Screen Archive: the regional network - a new support group for anyone holding collections made in or about London.
A light lunch will be provided.
