Call for Papers
Manzoni and the Historical Novel
University of Toronto
October 18-20, 2007
The purpose of this conference is to bring together scholars interested in
revisiting the theory and history of the historical novel in nineteenth
century Italy. We are especially interested in the role played by Alessandro
Manzoni in the development of the genre in Italy. Topics may be in any of the
following categories: (i) pre-history and early history of the historical
novel; (ii) theory of the historical novel; (iii) development of the
historical novel in Italy and in the rest of Europe; (iv) Manzoni and other
authors of historical novels; (v) legacy and reception history of the
historical novel.
The keynote address will be given by Professor Gino Tellini (University of
Florence). The Conference will feature eminent scholars from Europe and North
America. Graduate students are encouraged to propose papers. Interdisciplinary
and comparative approaches are encouraged.
Papers should be approximately 20 minutes in length and may be either in
Italian, or English.

Proceedings of Conference (Full Papers)
All speakers will be required to submit their final version of their paper by
December 31, 2007 for inclusion in the Proceedings. Guidelines for the full
paper will be posted on the conference website. The proceedings will be
published in 2008.
