Dear Colleagues,
CONSUMERS AND CHOICE IN A THROWAWAY SOCIETY
DTI Conference Centre, Victoria Street, London
2nd July 2007
We are pleased to announce details of our forthcoming seminar, which aims
to advance discussion of policies relating to the short life span of many
consumer products through the use of product road maps and choice editing.
The kinds of issues that will be addressed are: What is the 'road map' for
longer lasting products? Do consumers have the right to choose short-lived
or disposable products? Or should 'bad' choices be edited out by
government and retailers? If so, how should 'choice editing' be achieved
and which products should be targeted? How can economically disadvantaged
consumers be expected to buy products that are relatively expensive
because they are made to last?
The keynote speakers are Prof. Dr. Lucia Reisch, Copenhagen Business
School, Denmark, Dr. Alan Knight OBE, Commissioner, Sustainable
Development Commission and Dr. Dorothy Maxwell, Expert Consultant on
Sustainable Products and Services, Defra. The event will include a panel
discussion with representatives from industry, the retail sector,
government, academia and NGOs. Group and plenary discussions will also
feature in the day's activities.
You are encouraged to register early for this event, which is being
supported by the Sustainable Development Commission, the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department of Trade and
Industry. Further details, together with a booking form, are provided on
our website: http://extra.shu.ac.uk/productlife/seminar_07.html.
